Trees for Bugs Initiative

We at Kentico Software have decided to plant a tree for every bug found in the latest version of our product - Kentico CMS for ASP.NET. We also promise to fix all reported bugs within 7 working days. Twice a year, we plant a tree as a compensation for each bug found by users of our software.

We are always planning to plant more trees than the expected number of reported bugs. Then, only the trees reported by the clients will be planted in their honor and the rest of the trees will be planted in the honor of Kentico developers. Each tree will be marked with a label containing the name of the client who reported the bug, as well as the company and country they come from. Each tree is also listed in the Tree Gallery and marked in Google Maps, so that the tree owner can visit the tree in the future (some of the trees will have hays to crop). Photos from planting events can be found at Trees for bugs facebook page.

Kentico is a full featured content management system, containing 250+ configurable Web parts and 30+ modules. Each module is covered by a particular development team, responsible for its development and correctness. Therefore, each team shall plant as many trees as the number of bugs found in its modules. Naturally, the rest of the company (especially testers ;) will help them with it. Distribution of bugs/trees between individual development teams is shown in a graph.

The Trees for Bugs initiative is carried out in cooperation with the Environmental Partnership, which is a leading Czech foundation supporting sustainable development projects throughout all Czech Republic regions. The foundation will choose appropriate project for Kentico‘s Trees for Bugs initiative. It’s usually an avenue, a park or a habitat corridor within a range of 150km from Brno, Czech Republic, where the headquarters of Kentico is located. The foundation doesn’t only choose the project based on the location and kind of trees, but also according to its social aspect – trees are planted along the paths where kids go to school, in abandoned former recreational places, close to senior houses, etc.

We think that this initiative represents a win-win situation for everyone, since it ends up with these:

•    Clean air and a clean web content management solution
•    Tree planted in honor of a client as a compensation for the bug they had to face
•    Contribution to the landscape locally and to the atmosphere globally
•    Development team ready to switch from IT to forestry and backwards anytime ;)

If you face a bug you can report it through this form

Should you have any questions on this project, please feel free to contact us.

TImeline:
We gather all information about reported bugs and twice a year (April and October) and we plant trees for all bugs submitted by that date. The counter, country standings and the graph at the homepage of Trees for Bugs microstite is clear down with every release of a new version.
